This book was very cute, clever, and it also has some education thrown into it as well. The colors are very vibrant and they draw you in the story. My son’s favorite part about this book was the pictures. My son and I read it together and he absolutely loved it. This book is a charming children’s story. I highly recommend this book to anyone with little ones!!! I believe this has all the makings of a classic children’s book on a par with “The Pokey Little Puppy.” Luthman has shown an outstanding understanding of what makes young children tick. That, and the beautiful, bright and simple illustrations make this a children's book that little ones will want to have read to them over and over, ‘til they too can “read” it for themselves. Kids learn easier if a simple rhyme is read rather than just words and “Franky The Finicky Flamingo” has just the right style and rhythm of wording. It’s not so much about the words, (although those are important too!!), but more about the rhythm incorporated into the book. The wording is in rhyme which is very rhythmic. This is a cute story that teaches about birds' diets and shows kids the importance of a proper diet. But I think the point is that Franky needed to try other birds' "cuisines" to develop an appreciation for the food he's supposed to eat. I couldn't help but think that if you don't like a certain type of food, you're unlikely to start liking it after finding out about its health benefits. In the beginning, he doesn't like this food, but by the end, he finds it yummy and great because it's pink. We're not told what type of food Franky eats at the beginning of the story, but I assume it was what flamingos usually eat.

Franky considers choices like wiggly worms but they aren't cutting it. Franky, the Finicky Flamingo, is just like them. While at this time it is not known yet if my little grandson will be a finicky eater, that's always a possibility.
